Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia or (Male Breasts)
Male breast reduction patients run the gamut from many well-known body builders (known as "Beach Tits") with impressive titles to high profiled businessmen, athletes and young men alike. The condition can be:

1. Congenital Gynecomastia - (at age 12- children begin to see breasts developing). Sometimes, it disappears at maturity or...

2. Acquired Gynecomastia- (from medications such as steroids, aspirin, digitalis, etc.), from hormonal changes (part of syndrome), or, although rare, from cancer which is seen more in male patients today than ever before.

Symptoms may include pain, discomfort or discharge from the nipples or hard masses both unilateral and/or bilateral.

Treatment can be either conservative or surgical.

  • Conservative treatment of Gynecomastia would be to stop the medications or treat hormonal disease.
  • Surgical treatment of enlarged male breasts may include:
    • A. Liposuction to help reduce the fatty tissue (True  Gynecomastia, which is hard breast tissue, must be diagnosed, and this treatment would not be  effective or...
    • B. Surgical excision of the abdominal breast tissue by making a small, usually inconspicuous incision in the lower part of the areola. This surgery should only be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.
